2 Ways to Unlock the Treasure Within You

Wecome back!

Do you feel like there IS a treasure inside of you, but you don't know where to start?!  I have two keys for you - that you MUST have to UNLOCK treasure, so you can spread the wealth!!

Get moving!!

Do you feel you have nothing to share with others?  (Hint:  You have much to share!)

People will connect with you if you share your weaknesses.  Show that you are trying new things and that you are NOT the "expert" at it!

Invite them to follow your journey...

Just do.  Cut the crap.

"If your first video is perfect, you waited too long to do it!"  Ray Hidgon

There are people out there that are LOOKING FOR YOU.  They need your solution to their problem.  There is an audience out there, needing to hear your message.

Get started - keep going.

You don’t have to get it perfect, you just have to get it going!  Babies don’t walk the first time they try, but eventually, they get it right.
— Jack Canfield

Focus on process!!

Marry the process and divorce the outcome.

Don't be so tied to the feeling and thought of the outcome.  That should not be your driving force.

Process:  BUILD the audience.  MASTER THAT PROCESS!  Do those activities!  Be concerned about the front end of this - then the success of this activity WILL BE MANIFESTED.

INVEST in yourself and you will never "run out" of things to teach!  Because the people that can't buy, CAN'T CHARGE.

Be the Master of the Toast!

I'm a designer for a Fortune 500 Company in the Facilities/Operations Department - although we have facilities worldwide, there are almost 8,000 employees across campus in our city.  One thing I love is the variety of projects I work on and people I meet.  Recently, I was working on some changes in a Conference Room and I saw Toastmasters Club info on a whiteboard.  I didn't know we had a club on campus!

The thought of joining Toastmasters has arisen in my mind previously, fleetingly.  But seeing this piqued my interest and immediately I knew I wanted to join!  Felt COMPELLED to join - I had seen it for a reason!  To work on my skills, to improve.

This is now happening and I'll be sharing tips and thoughts through this process!

The first "unofficial" Toastmasters meeting occurred on March 24, 1905, at the YMCA in Santa Ana, CA.  The meeting consisted of various participants speaking, much like the meetings that still are happening today!  Today, the Toastmaster's International organization is worldwide and consists of approximately 345,000 members throughout 15,900 member clubs in 142 countries.

Toastmasters was founded by Ralph C. Smedley on October 22, 1924 and following his writing of the Manual of Instructions & Ten Lessons in Public Speaking, was incorporated on December 19, 1932.

The premise:

IMPROVE COMMUNICATION, PUBLIC SPEAKING AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Toastmasters?

I mentioned Toastmasters on Facebook (and in person!) recently to see if others had experience with the club and learned some people had never heard of it.

Not this kind of toast... 😂

🔻👇👇👇🔻

This is more like it!

But let's back up several centuries...

How did toasting come about?

The Latin word Prosit is derived from the German word Prost.  In short, this means "To you & your health."  The word toast came to be when spiced toast was added to wine for flavor - the quality of wine was not the best in the 17th century, so the spices flavored the wine while the bread was said to absorb some of its acidity.  It also filtered some of the yuck-o sediment that collected on the bottom of the glass.

The person toasting will gain the crowd's attention by an announcement or tapping on a glass.  This person will then honor those for which the event is happening, followed by raising the glass then taking a drink.  A toast may be humorous, somber, full of sentiment, or cross over into the realm of bawdy or insulting!

The term "toasting" came about through symbolism, or metonymy.  When the term of one object replaces the other, by association.  A few examples are:

  1. I can't believe the Cubs actually won the Series!  (The Cubs is the name of the sports team, used in place of its individual members.)
  2. That will be a great dish to take to our work potluck!  (The dish is used in place of the actual food that you would be brining for the meal.)
  3. The pen is mightier than the sword.  (A tool is often used to signify the job it does.  This also means the spoken word is mightier than military force.)

There is an entire set of rules and etiquette surrounding toasting, in addition to superstitions, but we'll move on from here!

What's with the name, "Toastmasters International"??

As you may have guessed with my history and etymology lesson above, the group was named for someone giving a toast:  a toastmaster.  The person presenting that honor of leading a toast at banquets, weddings, and many other occasions.  I also mentioned above that the mission of this club is to improve communication, public speaking and leadership skills.   The end goal is for members to gain a greater sense of self-worth, self-confidence and personal growth.

The Toastmaster values resonate highly with me.  They are as follows:

  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Service
  • Excellence

I found the great infographic below on the Toastmasters International website - it has a ton of really interesting info, so check it out!

If you would like to work on your public speaking and communication skills, you can check out their website.  I'll check in with you as I continue on my self-improvement journey!

Are You a Doppelgänger or Are You... YOU?

doppelganger.png

How did you decide who you were going to be?  (AND YOU MAY NOT BE FINISHED "BECOMING YOU" YET!)  Did you choose an occupation, because it was something your parent or another family memeber did?  (Which would be typical in a business that is handed down, generation to generation - I once worked for a place like this...  it's now in the 4th generation, for better or worse.)

Do you work in a career field that "runs in the family"?  I know a family that is in the 4th generation of producing nurses and healthcare workers - very nurturing!

There is tradition and there are talents you have inherently in you & your personality.  (There are many types of personality tests that can help you out with that!)

Even if you have a propensity toward a particular occupation, you can have and be

ANYTHING YOU DREAM & WORK TO BE!

Yesterday, I had to wait on an oil change for my car and I walked over to Starbucks.  Because I was in need of A) Coffee and B) Food and it was Starbucks or Petco and it was really too early in the day to be eating crickets.  (Although they are a good source of protein!)  Haha!

I sat down in the corner and when I looked up, I saw that I was seated opposite President Lincoln!  Yes.  I took a photo of him on the sly - I didn't want to bother him, as he was busily writing on his paper-covered 2-top table.

Years ago, a musical group was assembled from my hometown and they perform around the area and sometimes in neighboring states - my dad and sister were both flagship members in the Marengo Civil War Band.  I've been to performances and have acted as a substitute performer in the group - so I have seen this Abe Lincoln look-alike at reenactments.

Seeing "Air Force One" and "Abraham Lincoln" emblazened on his jacket, I knew it was him!  (Other than the obvious fact that he is Honest Abe's doppelgänger!)

Would you want to be a celebrity or historical look-alike?  If you were, what would you do - ignore it or use that to help in making history alive?  What celebrity or historical person would you love to look like?

Who are you and what are your qualities?  Who do you want to be?

Figure that out, write it down and make a plan so you can BECOME.

Contemplating Meditation

Delving into more of the same topic...  Meditation.  More specifically:

What is it?

It's extensively defined in the dictionary.  However, it has much more depth than black words on a white page.

I've found a range of interesting definitions on the subject:

Meditation is basically about quieting your mind and getting rid of all the mental “chatter” many people experience daily.  As your mind becomes quiet and peaceful, you become more open to the realms of spirit. You reconnect with your true self, with your spiritual essence.
— John Cali, freelance writer & publisher

It's not something to define, but something to experience.

It is the practice of dissolving. It is just like when you have understood some concept, it is not more. Practice of meditation is understanding it, until it is no more. A seeking to understand it is the practice.
— Prashanth Hirematada, Author of LAMP

Meditation is a state, not a process.

If you view meditation as something that is “done” , a process, then you will find hundreds of different methods , philosophies and practices.
But the pursuit of understanding oneself is the most personal endeavor anyone can embark one. Just as they say one persons medicine may be another persons’s poison, same can be said about meditation. In the pursuit of spiritual understanding of oneself many questions arise within us. We seek answers to questions which may sometimes make sense to only one person,,,,Me...the person asking the question.
All answers are available right within us. We need to uncover the answers, and that needs patience. There are no shortcuts to the best things in life including the answer to the inscrutable yer obvious question , “Who Am I?”
— Vivek Ravindranath

It's removing the Power of Habit from your Body and replacing it with the Power of your Mind.

The moment we utter the word “meditation,” there are all kinds of misconceptions about it... You cannot do meditation but you can become meditative. Meditation is a certain quality. It is not a certain act.
— Kush Sareen

Meditation is being in a state where possibilities are infinite, not constrained by any physical boundaries.  No limits, you are rewriting your own destiny by rewiring the mind.

Nobody can define Meditation.
Because it can’t be done.
You can only go into meditation.
— Vijay Mamoria

I came across this story and it brought to me a truth.  While I'm not Buddhist, I believe this story can help anyone gain clarity:

Buddha was on his way walking from one town to another, with a few of his followers, they happen to pass by a river.  Buddha took some rest under the cool shade of a tree and asked one of his disciples to get some water from the river.

As the disciple approached the lake, he found that women of the nearby village were washing their clothes, men were bathing their cattle, children were playing and a bullock cart just crossed the river to get to the other side of the village. All this hustle and bustle in the water had compelled the water to become muddy. The disciple thought, “How can I give this water to my master?”

He went back and said “Master, the water has become too muddy and is unfit for drinking so I came back.”

After some time passed, Buddha sent his disciple yet again to fetch water for him.

The disciple readily went to the river. This time, nobody was there but still the water was muddy due to all the activities that had happened. He went back and said “Master the water is still too muddy.”

After more time passed, Buddha sent his disciple yet again to fetch water for him.

This time, there was no muddiness and the water of the river was silent and smooth with clear water, the disciple took a pot and collected some water and took it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water and then looking at the disciple and asked “What did you do to make the water clean.”

“Nothing” his disciple said “I have done nothing, I just let it be…. and the mud settled down on its own and I got clear water."

Buddha said, “Our human mind is the same. When the disturbance of anger or sadness comes it disturbs the sentiments and emotions of the human mind and makes it unclear. So when it is disturbed just let it be. Relax and give it some time to settle down. It will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen by itself. It is effortless.”

It is effortless.

PEACE
