10 Little-Known Reasons You Lack Self-Confidence (and What To Do About It)

Have you ever noticed someone walk in the room and they have a certain je ne sais quoi?  Others move out of their way when they confidently stride through the space.  

Maybe she's born with it... 

Self-confidence is not genetic, it is created by being aware of & tweaking physical and mental behaviors.    

Confidence is a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.  This is different than Arrogance in that it is an inflated sense that you're better at something than you actually are.  To be confident in yourself is a healthy mental state.

Self-confidence is great for a multitude of reasons!  

  • Creates a Higher Level of Productivity
  • Heightens the Pursuit of Success
  • No longer afraid of failure
  • Happier
  • Attract other self-confident people

You don't drink enough water.

Yep, that's right!  Following are a few symptoms of dehydration:

  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Headaches
  • Fainting

Need I go on?  If you are feeling crappy from being dehydrated, you will NOT have a very high level of self-confidence.  There are varying suggestions on how much water to drink - but just keep your water bottle by your side and reach for that if you're feeling thirsty OR hungry.  (Actually, you shouldn't wait until you are thirsty - purposefully choose to sip on that throughout each hour to maintain hydration.)


You don't look the part.

Have you heard the phrase "Dress for Success"?  You don't have to walk around every day in a sequined tux, but you'll be more confident if you're well-groomed and dressed nicely.  That may mean different things to different people, but I'm not talking about sweatpants and a torn, baggy T-shirt.  

In Napoleon Hill's The Law of Success in 16 Lessons, he brings this up in several chapters.  In chapter 7, there is an entire section called "The Psychology of Good Clothes."  If you have the time, I recommend you read it.  Click the button below to read the section - it ends with this thought:

It may be true, as a well known poet has said, that "clothes do not make the man," but no one can deny the fact that good clothes go a very long way toward giving him a favorable start.

Your body language is holding you back.

The way you hold yourself has a direct bearing on your body - it will also show others what you think of yourself.  Stand with your back straight and your head held high!  Roll your shoulders back a few times, so you can feel where they should be.  Hold them back, with your chest naturally out.  

This will not only help your confidence, it will help your back, neck, and shoulders feel much better!

You are not active enough.

Lack of activity will make you tired and generally not feel as well.  Even moderate exercise, such as walking, will get your blood pumping - especially to your most vital organ: your brain!  The more you move, the better your body will feel overall - and make you more confident!

Walk, run, do yoga, or even dance in the forest!  

Do what you LOVE - getting fit & confident will be a great side effect!


You are not being true to yourself.

Are you being...  YOU?!  Or parading around with a false facade, showing people what you THINK they want to see???  That helps no one, least of all you.  First, others can see that lie from a mile away!  Second, it's just hindering you.  Here's the thing:  if your thoughts don't match your action, inner doesn't match outer...  your success will be halted until you get that into alignment.  Also, once you get that figured out, you will begin to attract those people to you that resonate with your personality and thinking.  

So, sit down and really think...  WHO ARE YOU?  Or, even better, what higher version of you do you want to be?  And become.  But become YOU.  

This little lady is not very old, but she stays pretty true to her authentic self!
