How to Conquer Your Emotions!

How to CONQUER your emotions when they bring you to a screeching HALT!!

We sometimes experience emotions that are counter to our Vision!  

But how do you get past them so you may achieve success?!

Negative emotions adversely affect physical health and cause disease.  This is supported by scientific proof - Jack P. Shonkoff, director of the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard, has made the study of childhood development his life's work.  This does also delve into the ways Toxic Stress "can have damaging effects on learning, behavior, and health across the lifespan."  

It has long been postulated that stress causes many physical issues, including coronary heart disease.  Laura Diane Kubzansky, Ph.D., Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard, has studied at length a correlation between PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and coronary heart disease (CHD).  Click here to read the full article.

Both scholars have also deliberated on the inverse - that positive mental health positively affects the overal health of a subject.  Not only do negative and positive outlooks affect physiology, it directly affects mental health.  

The State of Mind = The State of Body

We are a sum of parts - but must take care of ALL of the parts!!  These are all interconnected and if one is functioning in a faulty way, it will affect others in a negative way.  

When you are in a period of stress, anxiety, worry or fear...  do not make impactful decisions.  You must have inner peace to make decisions that will keep moving you forward toward success in life.  If the emotion is strong, it may even make you irrational.  But you can understand and learn how to CONTROL your emotions.  Learning to control your emotions and applying that control is called Emotional Intelligence.

Marketing expert, Ron Gelok, presented additional factors you can take into account when discerning the way in which you may begin to gain control over your emotions.


Take inventory of what you put into your body.

  {FRIEND OR FOE}  What you put into your body will either help or hinder you!

I've said it before and will again!  Hydrate.  It's a well-documented fact that all of our organs need the proper amount of water to function properly.  If you are dehydrated, your body isn't functioning well...  causing yet another stress.  (Stress itself can cause dehydration.)    

So work on some of those physical responses that can be caused by both stress and dehydration:  increased heart rate, nausea, fatigue, headache...  and keep your water bottle nearby!

Are you FUELING your body with quality, organic foods?  Lots of veggies from every color of the rainbow?!  Supplementing that with some fruits?  {antioxidants+fiber}  How about lean, quality meat (if you are a carnivore)?  Give your brain some good fats!  So many great foods available to gift to our bodies!  

If you have a tendency to slip into JUNK FOOD mode, keep a journal for awhile - you'll see in black & white the foods you "sneak."  (Just because no one knows about them but you does NOT mean they are calorie- or fat-free!)  


Release that which does not serve you.

What are you holding onto that does not serve you?!  This could be a negative emotion, a person, a relationship, etc.  

4 Emotions that fall into this category are:

  1. ANGER  It will destroy you!  Decide to {FORGIVE} and {LET GO}.  It might not be fair.  (You have to do this for YOU.)  Your emotions will catch up to your decision.    
  2. GUILT  This will burden you, it will WEIGH you down!  Don't let this TRAP you.  Past mistakes are gone.  Do not dwell on those, focus on where you are moving.  (Forward.) 
  3. GRIEF  You must grieve your loss - a business, a friend, a relationship...  Go through the process.  But it CANNOT CONTROL you - don't stay there.  Must be able to move on - it's ok to find someone to counsel you.  Move forward.
  4. DOUBT  You can shift this with practice on your mindset.  {RESET}  Where is YOUR truth?  Look at that to {RESET}.    

Which of these is holding you back?  Make this statement aloud!  

"I let go of _____________________.  I am thankful for the time I had with __________________.  But now, I choose to let it go and embrace what the future holds."

This can be a prayer, or an affirmation, or state this: whatever resonates with you!   

BECOME WHOLE.

Be intentional about moving past this!

GET REAL!  

Fill in the blank with what you are hanging onto.  (Relationship, career, decision, etc.)  CUT THAT TIE if it's not serving you...  

let. it. go.

Live in the present.

If you only focus on the goal for tomorrow, you may be setting yourself up to fail.  Focus on the fact that you are having successes TODAY!  Focus on that next, right decision you will make, that next small victory.  Keep then maintaining a clear concentration of that next "thing."

Be present, purposeful today. 

Don't get stuck so you aren't moving forward.  

Give yourself the gift of doing it today.  You will be liberated and energized, knowing that you have taken control to do it TODAY.  Because you just don't know when that time will run out.  

You will run out of tomorrows and you will not have impacted others.  The wealthiest place on the planet is the graveyard...  What "could have been."  The "dreams that were."  

Take action.
