Become Immune to Decision Constipation!

Welcome back!

Decisions, decisions.

Nothing in the body happens independent of the rest of the body: mind-body connection.  That's true also of the activity of decision-making.  What you put into your body and how you train your mind.

The average adult makes approximately 35,000 decisions a day.

Some decisions are more impactful than others, potentially shaping the course of your life.

From Pigs Don’t Know Pigs Stink audio by Dave Severn, Amway Executive Diamond status:

“First principle of success:  you’ve got make a decision in life whether you’re gonna make it or not.  If you haven’t made a decision to make it, you’ve made an automatic decision NOT to make it.  You either succeed in life or you fail, there is no in between.

You’re either gonna make SOMETHING happen or you’re gonna make NOTHING happen.

And that’s the very first principle you need to understand.  So success begins with the decision that SOMETHING is gonna happen.  Now here’s where a lot of people blow it.  They blow it real bad.  They have to figure out HOW they’re gonna get something done before they decide to do it.

And when you confuse the DECISION process with the how-you’re-gonna-achieve it process, you won’t make a decision.  It’s called decision constipation.  And if you haven’t made a decision to succeed, you’ve made an automatic decision to fail.  Because no action equals failure!”

If you are feeling “stuck” or very indecisive, it may be related to an imbalance in one of the five Chinese Elements FIVE CHINESE ELEMENTS, specifically the Wood Element.  If in balance, those with strong energy in this element have clear goals and a vision of what they would like to accomplish – and also know how to bring them to fruition.

However, when there is a Wood Element imbalance or weakness (or an imbalance in the Liver/Gallbladder acupuncture meridian), the decision making process is impacted.

“The Liver and the Gallbladder are a yin yang pair. The Liver influences our capacity to plan our life and find a sense of direction. The Gallbladder influences our courage and conviction to make decisions to carry out that plan. When the Liver and Gallbladder are in balance, mentally and spiritually we are focused and decisive about our purpose in life,”  Acupuncture Services of Central New York.

In Chinese medicine, each organ is related to a physical and mental function in the body.  There are other symptoms that may show if one has a Wood imbalance, and these may be addressed by treating with acupuncture, possibly paired with moxabustion (a heat therapy often used with acupuncture).

“Adding green foods helps to benefit the Wood element, including plenty of young plants, fresh greens, sprouts, and immature cereal grasses (i.e. wheat grass). Basil, fennel, marjoram, rosemary, caraway, dill, and bay leaf are pungent cooking spices desirable for spring.

In addition, the following are wonderful foods to add to the spring diet (Note by Author:  the Wood element is related to Springtime):
{whole grains (especially rye), vegetables, legumes and other complex carbohydrates, honey (used sparingly), unrefined cane juice, whole sugar cane, licorice root, molasses, and rice syrup, high quality vinegars (i.e. apple cider, brown rice, rice wine), lemon, lime, grapefruit, romaine lettuce, asparagus, amaranth, quinoa, alfalfa, radish leaves, citrus peels, mints, lemon balm, or dandelion.}

As well as what you eat, beverages are just as influential. Here a few things you can do every day to help the proper function of the Wood element that are easy and highly effective:

  • Squeeze a quarter of lemon into a 12 oz. glass of warm (not hot!) water. Done every morning, this has been one of the single most effective remedies I have seen to help keep stress reactions low and even help to reduce PMS symptoms.
  • Tea (avoid coffee!) – any infusion of the following, in any combination, can be very helpful:
    • Hibiscus, Dried Berries – currants, raspberry, elderberry, any small, sour berry would be just fine!, Lemon grass,
    • Citrus peel – interestingly, lemon peel can help disperse the Wood element; use orange peel if stress results in shortness of breath as it can help to disperse lung energies. We will discuss this more when we address the metal element in the fall!, Rose petal, or Dandelion.

In addition to food being an integral part of keeping the Wood element free flowing, having an established work out plan can be essential. Stretching, Qigong/Tai chi, yoga, light weights, walking, meditation, light cardio, cycling all can be effective workout programs to start with if you do not have an established program for yourself already in place.”

Your mind and body will aid in being that vehicle with which you can make better, stronger, and quicker decisions – to meet your goals and stir motivation from within.

Rush Freewill

There are those who think that life
Has nothing left to chance
With a host of holy horrors
To direct our aimless dance

A planet of playthings
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
“The stars aren’t aligned,
Or the gods are malign”
Blame is better to give than receive

You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice

If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice

These lyrics often echo in my mind.  Even if you are being passive and are not moving forward with an action that can benefit your life or move you forward, THAT IS STILL A CHOICE.  So make the right decision.

I have been complacent for far too long.

I have held my breath for far too long.

Make that choice to move forward, no matter what your dream is – this is the one and only life you get, folks.  Make the most of it – choose and the vehicle to accomplish your dream will follow.
