This is a great action to aspire to - to DO! I am working on creating this daily habit and to be honest, a lot of my daily reading is blog-related. I love to read, just have fallen away from making time to do it.
Reading daily is not referring to reading the latest fashion magazine, or tabloids, and not necessarily even a novel. This is reading something to enrich your mind, maybe make you think of something in a totally different way.
I’ve always been fascinated and inspired by books that may be considered “self-help” books, typically finding great nuggets of information in them!!
If you read just 10 pages a day, what would that get you? Well, it would give you The Slight Edge. What does that mean? If you read only 10 pages per day, you would be reading 3,560 pages per year. This translates into approximately 10-15 books per year. What could you with that kind of wealth beween your ears?!
This is my current “to read” list (always being added to!). I’ve read some of them years ago, and really want to revisit those, while wanting to tap into the ideas in some of the books I’ve not read. (Some of these I've read are perpetually on the list!)
I love the lessons in “The Holy Man” by Susan Trott, which I first came across by reading an excerpt of a daily email I receive from Hazelden Foundation. They have a lot of excellent points, directed toward healing from substance abuse, but useful in general life and growth! I ended up buying that book – and while it’s a quick and easy read, the writing is from an interesting perspective and sheds light on people in a sociological way.
I love the excerpt below from “The Holy Man” to a couple that had just fallen in love, and were to be married:
“I wish you happiness,” he said. “Be kind to each other and to others. Work hard together. Keep learning about the world. When you are reading a magazine or newspaper, consider reading a novel or poetry. When reading a novel, consider reading a book on astronomy or bird behavior. Realize you have at least an extra hour every day, probably four, in which to learn a language or calculus. Use your mind to the hilt. Life passes quickly and, toward the end, gathers speed like a freight train running downhill. The more you know, the more you enrich yourselves and others.”
Read daily. This requires a commitment, but it’s very doable! Just sit down and feed your brain positive, powerful information every day.
Philippians 4:8 touches on this... Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Fill your mind with these quality concepts and it will overflow into your life.
Think about such things. Think on these things!
